TEXT: JOHN 4: 4-17
Jesus was going through Samaria, he met a woman that came
to draw water at the well, and Jesus said to her “will you give me a drink?”
(John 4:17). Jesus asked the woman for water not because he was thirsty, but he
wanted to start a conversation with her.
Immediately Jesus saw her, he knew everything going on in
her life, he engaged in a conversation with her because he wanted to change her
life for good. Jesus started a friendly conversation with her so that he would
be able to introduce the gospel to her. The lesson we need to learn here is
that we don’t need to condemn people even when we are sure that the person is
doing the wrong thing. God said in His word that we should correct in love, if
Jesus had pointed an accusing finger on the woman at first, she would not have
listened to other things that Jesus wanted to tell her, and she wouldn't have
had the opportunity to change for a better person.
Most believers and ministers of God these days are fond of
judging and condemning unbelievers that they are suppose to bring to Christ.
Instead of them to tell unbelievers about the love of Christ and make them see
the power and benefits of coming to Christ, they scare them away by showing
them hatred instead of love. Jesus showed us love by dying for us while we
were still sinners, we should be able to do the same to the unsaved so that
they will be willing to come to repentance.
Jesus in his conversation with the woman said “if you know
the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked
him and he would have given you living water.” (John 4:10). Jesus was telling
the woman about the joy and happiness that one can find in Christ without
bringing up her flaws. This made the woman more interested in the conversation
and was eager to drink the “living water.” Jesus answered, everyone who drinks
this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will
never thirst. Indeed the water I give him will become in him a spring of water
welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to him “sir, give me this water so
I won’t be thirsty…. (John 4: 13-15). The woman was happy and eager to do away
with her dirty life, because Jesus corrected her in love and she had a personal
encounter that made her to be willing to change for good. Believers; let us
learn from Jesus, instead of condemning or casting away sinners, let us
approach them in love, let us show them love like Jesus did. If we are mean and
hostile to sinners and we claim that we are followers of Jesus, nobody will
want to follow us to serve our God. With love draw unbelievers to Jesus, don’t
see yourself too holy or righteous to relate with sinners to come to Christ, If
we keep running away from them, who will bring them to Christ? You cannot bring
unbelievers to Christ from afar; let us show them love so that they will be
willing to come to Christ.
